Which audiobook platforms accept AI narration? (October 2026)

Producing an audiobook with an AI voice takes days instead of weeks. Where you can sell it is a different question: stores treat AI narration very differently, and their rules change. This is the state in October 2026, based on the platforms' own help pages where we could find them.
ACX and Audible
ACX, the route to Audible for independent authors, says in its audio submission requirements (dated 15 April 2026) that an audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized, and that unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI or automated recordings is prohibited. The same page says Audible is working to accept third-party text-to-speech content, without a date. Amazon runs its own AI narration for selected Kindle e-books, which goes through Amazon itself.
Kobo
Kobo Writing Life accepts AI-narrated audiobooks if they are labelled: the narrator contributor in the metadata is set to "Synthesised voice", marked male, female or unspecified.
Other stores and distributors
For Spotify, Apple Books, Google Play Books and the audiobook distributors, public information is inconsistent. Some accept AI narration only from their own tools or from a list of approved tools; some require a label. Read the current guidelines of each store before you produce, not just before you upload.
Selling directly
Outside the big stores, you decide: your own website or shop, a bonus with the print edition, a serialized podcast, or a membership platform for supporters. Labelling the narration as AI-generated is then a question of fairness to your listeners, and we recommend it.
Producing it well
- Test the voice for ten minutes, not ten seconds: listening fatigue only shows over time.
- Work chapter by chapter: voice, check and correct each chapter before you move on.
- Fix names and terms in the editor, and keep a list so they sound the same in every chapter.
- Plan the length: one hour of audio is about 60,000 characters.
Rights
You need the audio rights to the text. For your own books that is clear; with a publishing contract, the audio rights often belong to the publisher. Audio made on any paid HancVoice plan or with a character pack may be used commercially. More about producing audiobooks on the audiobooks page.
Common questions
Can I publish an AI-narrated audiobook on Audible? Not through ACX as of April 2026, unless authorized. Amazon offers its own AI narration for selected Kindle e-books.
Do I have to label AI narration? On Kobo, yes: the narrator is set to "Synthesised voice". Other stores have their own rules, and for direct sales we recommend labelling it anyway.
How many characters is an audiobook? About 60,000 characters per hour. A novel of 80,000 words comes to roughly eight to nine hours.
